As landfall of the new world, the Bahamas has been a player on the stage of history. Our capitol, Nassau is steeped in the excitement that accompanied the growth and development of the tropics as the playground of the rich, famous and infamous. We stop at Parliament Square and its House of Assembly to reminisce about events that led to its establishment in 1729. The Law of the Brotherhood prevailed prior to its set-up. The walk continues along Parliament Street. We tread the grounds where only a short time ago a piece of modern history played out in the case of who gets custody of baby Danny Lynn, daughter and sole heir of Anna Nicole Smith’s contested fortune. Next on to the Garden of Remembrance as we learn about the effects of two world wars and circumstances surrounding the 1980 sinking of the Bahamian Defence Force Boat “Flamingo†by Cuban MIG fighter jets.
We move on to the 200 year old architectural marvel that was once a prison but now stands as a museum and library. It sits opposite the garden of our first hotel. Here, photo opportunities are offered either under the centuries old tamarind or silk cotton trees.
